Prada and the Thunderstorm

"And the thunder rolls/and the lightning strikes/another pup grows bold/on a sleepless night..."

An absolutely spectacular thunderstorm woke me and Prada up this morning around 3am Eastern. I half expected to have a terrified German shepherd jumping up into bed with me but she was cool as a cucumber the whole night. Got up at one point to go get herself a drink but other than that she was fine, just went right back to sleep.  I tell you I am truly grateful—Alabama has more than its share of thunderstorms!

Now, unlike Oregon's thunderstorms, this one lasted until...well, it's still going, actually. Bryan came around and told me this morning at breakfast that we'd be doing country work, and I'll admit that I wasn't a bit excited about working in the rain and wind (it’s not cold, just very wet out). As the storm got worse, though, Bryan and Shannon changed their minds and took us to a grocery store to do some inside work instead. Prada performed beautifully, even with Shannon walking right behind us. Didn't turn to look over her shoulder once! 'at's my girl! They say that the weather will improve for the next two-three hours, then get worse right about the time we're supposed to go on our second trip. Timing is everything...but it's good to know that thunder doesn't bother Prada--we were crossing a parking lot as a big ol' clap hit right over our heads and she didn't even bat an eyelash (that I could see).  I’m much less concerned about Alabama’s thunderstorm/tornado season than I was before.  I think the thunder startled me more than Prada!

(Prada continues to be uninterested in thunder, though rain’s a surefire way to get her in a bad mood!  She’s my little tornado-severity scale, too.  When the sirens go off I check to see if she’s worried.  Usually she looks annoyed and goes back to sleep.  If we’re outside, she looks even more annoyed and picks up the pace a little bit but otherwise doesn’t react.  I’ll write an entry about the catastrophic storms on April 27th, 2011, after I finish updating these older posts.)
